Well, as you already know, once we have found our prince charming, the next step becomes the ring! But which ring would it be? A vintage oval emerald in antique setting or the trendy solitaire in the platinum single band? Lets find out!

Well, we know that an engagement ring is a symbol of a couple’s love and commitment towards each other. It is symbolic of the fact that life’s going to change ( and for good). It is a symbol of the celebration of love! And it will be a constant sparkly reminder of the strength, dedication and devotion of your love and affection.

Hence it becomes all the more important to read this post before you pick yours.

  • Select the diamond cut you want

Diamond cuts are basically Round, Princess, Pear, Asscher, Emerald, Oval, Radiant, Marquise and Heart shaped. Pick a shape that you feel would look best on you. Princess cuts look best on long and slender fingers whereas emerald and ovals look best on small fingers. However round cuts are universal; they look great on one and all! This is where your personality should do all the talking.

  • Know the setting style

Setting styles differ on the basis of the way in which the diamond is “set” in the metal. Whether it is more protruding or more inset, whether it is arranged in a cluster or in a chain format. The different setting styles that you can opt for are Prong, Cathedral, Bezel, Tension, Pave/Cluster, Channel, Bar, Flush etc

  • Know the metal

Diamonds are set in a variety of metals but they look best in platinum, white gold and yellow gold. You can also try rose gold for a more classic vintage look. IMHO I feel yellow gold looks best on the Indian skin tone, although if you are on the fairer side a white metal ring would work for you too.

  • Know your diamond

Quick Trivia! – Did you know that diamonds are the hardest matter, are resistant to scratch and don’t lose their polish, which makes them the obvious winner over gemstones for engagement rings? Well if you didn’t then you do now! So how do we find our winner? Simple – The Four ‘C’s will guide you to the right one.

Carat: This signifies the weight of the diamond; more like it’s unit measurement. Usually it is directly co-related to the price of the diamond. Hence bigger the carat, higher the price. To know more click here

Colour : A diamond’s colour is rather the lack of it. Being a natural material, it has some colour to it (yellowness). The lesser the colour, the better the diamond is considered to be. Colour grades range from D (highest) to Z (lowest), with majority of diamonds belonging to the range I to F. To know more click here

However a word of caution if you want to pick a rock with higher colour grade, it is best to pair it with a white metal (platinum/ white gold) to enhance its colour and sparkle.

Clarity – If put simply, the fewer the imperfections, the better the clarity and hence better the diamond. The different clarity grades are VVS1, VVS2, VS1, VS2, SI1, SI2, I1, I2, I3. To know more click here

Cut – Already covered above in Point 1.

  • Set a Budget

If you have budget fixed, it becomes easier to sort out the diamond preferences. Lot of customisation or options can be looked at to work around the budget. Also most stores that you will visit would first like to know the budget along with the style and metal you are looking for.

  • Get a Certificate of appraisal

Always ask the store for a certificate of authenticity of the diamond and also if they are sourced from non-conflict countries in Africa. The certificate of authenticity should belong to a nationalised Gem Institute to avoid any quality issues.

  • Shop Safe

Recently I have heard people buying diamonds from individual jewellers to beat the market prices. Personally I prefer buying my high value items like jewellery, diamonds etc from reputed brands such as Krishniah Chetty & Sons, Tanishq Diamonds, Manubhai Jewellers, TBZ, Zales, Tiffanys, Blue Nile etc.
